Romeo and Juliet Blu-ray (The Royal Ballet) 2019

  • Matthew Ball and Yasmine Naghdi - two of The Royal Ballet's brightest young stars - play the doomed lovers in Kenneth MacMillan’s world-famous production of Romeo and Juliet. Sergey Prokofiev’s famously evocative score is the driver for some of the most ardent pas de deux and powerful set pieces in ballet history. The vibrant crowd scenes with magnificent designs by Nicholas Georgiadis vividly recreate the colour and bustle of 16th-century Verona in this Royal Ballet classic.

"From the quarrelling townsfolk to the stately ball guests, this is a Romeo packed with life, the whole company caught up in the ballet's unfolding tragedy." The Independent

"Naghdi has a rare, sombre virtuousness on stage; Ball, with his high forehead and curly hair, looked like a portrait of Philip Sidney... the closeness between them in their balcony scene marvellously showed two youngsters swimming in love." The Spectator

"Romeo and Juliet’s first dance features music as lushly romantic as anything Tchaikovsky devised. Ball and Naghdi evoke this dreaminess, leaning into the choreography’s teasing and playful side. Meeting later that evening, they soar in moments of bliss." The Reviews Hub
