Birtwistle: Minotaur DVD (The Royal Opera)

The world premiere of The Minotaur by composer Harrison Birtwistle and librettist David Harsent, commissioned by The Royal Opera, brings the Greek mythological character to the stage. Part-man part-beast, the Minotaur is trapped in the labyrinth, and longs to discover his true identity and voice. Theseus, sent to the island of Crete as part of a debt sacrifice, is determined to kill the monstrous creature. He attracts the attention of Ariadne, half-sister and keeper of The Minotaur, and it is her help that ensures his success. Captured here in High Definition video and surround sound, the cast is led by a sublime John Tomlinson as the Minotaur. They rise to great heights under the direction of Antonio Pappano, whose navigation of the monumental musical landscapes carries an intense authority.
