Verdi: La traviata DVD (The Royal Opera) 2019

Soprano Ermonela Jaho stars as Violetta Valéry, with Charles Castronovo as her lover Alfredo and Plácido Domingo as Alfredo’s stern father Giorgio Germont, in The Royal Opera’s much-loved production of Verdi’s La traviata.

One of the greatest of all operas, La traviata is based on the novel and play La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils, inspired in turn by the life and death of the real Parisian courtesan, Marie Duplessis. The opera tells the profoundly moving story of a courtesan prepared to sacrifice everything for love, and contains some of Verdi’s most beautiful arias and duets.

Richard Eyre’s engrossing naturalistic production features stunning designs by his regular collaborator Bob Crowley. Italian conductor Antonello Manacorda conducts Verdi’s sublime score, which offers a wonderful showcase for the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Royal Opera Chorus.

"Jaho gives everything she has, especially an exceptional diversity of soft singing, intimate, vulnerable, dreamy, apprehensive, intense and the result is a deeply moving portrayal." Financial Times

"Jaho’s mix of defiance, fragility and savage honesty builds to an overwhelming finale." The Guardian

"Castronovo is a splendid Alfredo, his bright, springy tone capturing the character’s impetuosity." Gramophone

"[Jaho] is heartbreaking and possesses a delicious luminosity of tone. Charles Castronvo is a suitably ardent Alfredo; Plácido Domingo a woofy Germont... The production... is handsome and traditional." Opera Now

Verdi: La traviata DVD (The Royal Opera) 2019

Mixed feelings

Not sure of why have a 3rd release of this production when the original 1994 with Angela Gheorghiu as Violetta remains the best to this day, most probably in the history of the Royal Opera House.
I had the same feelings when the DVD with Fleming and Calleja was released, both miscast for their roles at that particular time of their careers.
I would always buy a re-release version of that DVD (Decca), with the unsurpassable Gheorghiu, outstanding Frank Lopardo and Leo Nucci and under the baton of maestro Solti.
Jaho's typical histrionic acting (and sobbing) might impress some, but the voice has no particular timbre nor colour.
Castronovo is a fine Alfredo, while casting Domingo in baritone roles will always remain a mistery to opera lovers around the globe.
My two stars are solely for Richard Eyre's production, which I love.
