Puccini: Tosca DVD (Live Film)

Contemporary Rome is the setting for this unique and highly innovative version of Puccini's Tosca, performed in the Roman locations - and at the times of day - as Puccini had written into his score. Thus the action opens in the beautiful 16th-century church of Sant'Andrea della Valle at noon, where Cavaradossi (Domingo) is painting a portrait, moves to the Farnese Palace that evening where Tosca (Catherine Malfitano) dramatically stabs the lustful Scarpia (Ruggero Raimondi), and finally to the battlements of the Castel Sant'Angelo at dawn the following day where the final drama is played out.

Convincing Production set in the times and actual locations of the drama.

Brilliantly filmed and performed in the church of Saint Andrea, Farnese Palace and top of Castel Sant'Angelo with outstanding performances of the three main Characters. The dramatic and music intensity of "Tosca" demands singing and acting of the highest quality in Opera and the Principals rise to the occasion.
In particular the confrontation of Tosca and Scarpia in Act 2 is breathtakingly convincing. Catherine Malfitano is a little screeching at times although her interpretation of the role is the most convincing I have seen. Ruggero Raimondi is the most perfect Scarpia with unsurpassable acting and singing. His lustful urging for Tosca, expression and vocal quality, supreme.
My one disappointment being unable to get the subtitling on the screen despite the cover dissplaing coverage in various languages.
I shall be ordering 2/3 more Opera DVDs from Royal Opera while they are still available.
