Puccini: Tosca CD (Carlo Felice Cillario)

There are obvious parallels between Tosca - the passionate yet vulnerable Roman diva - and Maria Callas. "Vissi d'arte," the moving aria of Tosca from the second act of the opera, has had a special symbolic meaning since the death of the soprano in 1977. Tosca was the last opera Callas performed on the stage, at the Royal Opera House. Scarpia was sung by her highly esteemed colleague Tito Gobbi, another full-blooded actor. Criticist John Warrack wrote: 'All in all, this was one of those rare occasions when the various parts of an opera, like magic, melt into that all-embracing experience that we always expect.'
