Rudolf Nureyev's production of Petipa’s Raymonda Act III is Russian classical ballet summarized in one act, full of sparkle and precise technique, led magnificently in this performance by Natalia Osipova and Vadim Muntagirov. Frederick Ashton's Enigma Variations is quintessentially British in every way – from its score by Elgar and period designs by Julia Trevelyan Oman, to Ashton’s signature style, the essence of British ballet. Concerto, Kenneth MacMillan's masterpiece of classical technique fused with a contemporary mind, completes an evening that demonstrates the breadth of the Company’s heritage.

Concerto, Enigma variations, Raymonda Act III

I really enjoyed these three ballets, so different from each other. Macmillan's Concerto is a jewel of rhythmic and geometric precision set to music by Shostakovich. Synchronized movements and angles are respected, as are the height of the legs in arabesques, jetés and grands battements. All this without scenery, with refined costumes, just ballet in its purest form. I admire the suppleness, strength, grace, lightness and smiles, as if dancing didn't require any muscular effort or concentration. Frederick Ashton's Enigma Variations made me feel a little voyeure, in the intimacy of Edward Elgar and his family, with their many acquaintances and friends waiting for news. When it finally arrived, what joy and relief! Belle Époque decor, costumes and props. Raymonda Act III by Glazunov and Rudolf Nureyev after Marius Petipa is a fine example of ballet at its most classical and "monarchical", with an Eastern European accent, Hungary to be precise. I was delighted to see all the dancers in gold, white and cream, and above all the challenging choreography.
