Puccini: Tosca DVD (The Royal Opera) 2012

Jonathan Kent’s atmospheric and evocative production of Tosca – which has established itself as a Royal Opera classic – features a stunning cast. Angela Gheorghiu’s sensitively portrayed Tosca, a character with which she closely identifies, is paired with Jonas Kaufmann’s intense and compelling Cavaradossi, while Bryn Terfel is thrillingly malevolent as Scarpia. Antonio Pappano’s masterfully paced conducting captures all the drama and beauty of Puccini’s exhilarating opera. Arguably one of the great Royal Opera performances that's been captured on film.

"Bring together three of the most intuitive talents (and biggest stars) on the planet, meld them under the baton of Antonio Pappano whose command of every caress, swoon, and dramatic impulse of Puccini’s Tosca is not learned but instinctively felt and you have a recipe for the kind of evening that gives the Royal Opera its truly international status." The Independent

"Pappano's mastery of Puccinian pace and phrasing intensifies this turbulent score's onward surge, but he's also noticeably attentive to his singers... [Kaufmann's] cries of 'Vittoria!' are thrilling... and his acting never slackens... Tosca's mercurial character seems to resonate with [Gheorghiu] naturally... There are some decent Toscas on DVD already, but I'd start here" BBC Music Magazine

poor

Pappano takes the score far too slowly during the love duet, allowing Ghiorghu her drawn out affected smirks . Kaufmann allows himself to shout at this one of his earliest performaneces at the ROH. All this has the result of diminishing Bryn Terfels fine performance as if all three principals overact there is no contrast. Ghiorghuis magnificent voice falls victim to her incredibly irritating stage presence. Impossible to know whether she insisted on the exaggeratedly slow tempi whenever she is on stage, but Pappano should not hve indulged her

Excellent recording

Thoroughly enjoyed this recording with a superb caste. In fact I was so pleased with it I also quickly ordered and received another one which I gave to one of my friends who also thought the recording was superb. The acting as well as the voices were first class. Thank you
